Wei -Tai Kwok
Climate Reality Project
March 18th Saturday 4 p.m. Potluck and Program
St Jude Episcopal Church 20920 McClellan Rd Cupertino
In 2019 Wei Tai spoke to us about the climate crisis and how the US And China were responding to the challenge. Now, four years later, where does society stand ? In what ways have we moved forward ? Where are there still challenges ? What can you do to help?
Wei Tai will provide us with the latest updates on the science ,impacts and solutions to climate change . Since our last meeting he retrofitted his home to replace all the fossil fuel appliances with advanced electronic versions . He will share his experiences upgrading to a zero emission home . He will also help us unpack how you can be part of the solution by accessing new incentives from the inflation reduction act of 2022 . The act, which at $ 369 billion in decarbonization funding, is the largest climate change solution legislation in history of America. Come learn why he thinks the actions taken by the American people and the actions of Chinese people, are the "Key to Life on Planet Earth."
in his day job way he serves on Lafayette City Council and also works in the solar and renewable energy industry. Currently he is an advisor to Thule energy storage{ thermal energy storage )and Sunman Energy ( ultra lightweight flexible solar panels). He holds a BA in economics and political science from Yale University.
Come join us for the potluck and talk

By Winny Lin

Many of you probably have visited a quaint little town by Highway 1 with some of the world’s most dramatic ocean views —Monterey, California. Nobel prize author John Steinbeck also fueled its popularity and fame with his book “Cannery Row." But you probably didn't know that it's not just a place abundant with marine wildlife and fresh seafood. There is Chinese-American history there.

Ten years ago, my husband Kenny and I flew to California from Kentucky to visit our children during Christmas break. My daughter suggested we tour the infamous Cannery Row in Monterey Bay. As I was trying to take in all the beautiful water, the tourists’ hot spots, and souvenir shops, I was distracted by some signage at the end of Cannery Row. It mentioned that Chinese fishermen used to live here. I even vaguely remember seeing some little houses that were marked as their residences. It wasn't until years later when I moved to California that I learned more.

In 2014, Kenny and I moved to the Bay Area in California to be closer to our children and grandkids. Somehow we connected with the South Bay Chapter of US-China Peoples’ Friendship Association and met Gerry Low-Sabado at one of the meetings. As a 5th generation descendant of the Chinese fishermen, she was passionate and active in bringing community awareness of the contributions of the Chinese fishermen in Pacific Grove and Monterey Bay. She was interviewed by local tv stations and made special presentations for the Monterey Aquarium. I have always loved the history of Chinese-Americans so I was excited to become friends with Gerry and learn more about these fishermen. Unfortunately Gerry died of a brain tumor in September 2021, but her legacy has continued.

On May 14, 2022, nine of us joined hundreds of others to attend the annual "Walk of Remembrance” that Gerry started 11 years ago. Gerry’s husband, Randy Sabado, has carried on her mission, and this year's walk attracted more attention. Many local and California State officials came to the event, including California State Controller Betty T. Yee and former Oakland Mayor Lai Jean Quan. Why?

A few days before this ceremony, the Pacific Grove City Council unanimously approved an “Apology Resolution to the Chinese Village Community and Descendants for systemic discrimination, acts of fundamental injustice, violence and cruelty.” It acknowledged the following:

The first men and women settlers from China arrived by ship before California’s statehood and were met with prejudice and discrimination. The Point Alones fishing village became the largest Chinese fishing settlement in California by 1906. On the evening of May 16, 1906, a fire of suspicious origin swept through the village, destroying most of the more than 100 buildings. In the late19th century, the town passed an ordinance that banned Chinese from fishing during the day, forcing them to do their work under dangerous nighttime conditions. Ethnic Chinese and other minorities were also banned from owning property.

So at this year’s “Walk of Remembrance” on behalf of the Pacific Grove City, Council Member Chaps Poduri gave an official apology to the Chinese descendants. As he finished his speech, I happened to be sitting right behind the podium. I softly said, “Everybody, say ‘thank you.’” I was shocked when I heard the crowd exclaim, “Thank you!”

It was such an uplifting and encouraging event to see whites, blacks, women, men and children holding large photos of Chinese fishermen. And seeing messages and signage on the walk that communicated “change with kindness, remember and move forward, and diversity, equity and inclusion.” I realized that the tide has definitely started to change to be more pro-Chinese instead of anti-Asian.

In addition to the words and message of “diversity, equity, and inclusion,” I added my own, “unity” which I think is the ultimate goal of this movement. The night before the walk, I stayed up late to make four banners and added Chinese characters: diversity <span style="font-family: "PingFang TC"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">差异, equity <span style="font-family: "PingFang TC"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">公平, inclusion <span style="font-family: "PingFang TC"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">包容 and unity <span style="font-family: "PingFang TC"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">团结. Shirley Lin Kinoshita, a board member of the USCPFA South Bay Chapter, who is an artist, made two signs with a peony, China’s national flower, on each. Because of the signs, we attracted a lot of attention and had our photos taken by many people, including the official event photographer.The nine members of our group were John Marienthal, president of the USCPFA South Bay chapter; Shirley Lin Kinoshita, a chapter board member, her husband Kim Kinoshita, me (Winny Lin), my husband, Kenny Lin, two of our friends, Aileen Nicholas and Aubrey Szanto, from East Bay, and Eva Atkinson and her daughter Anna from Owensboro, Kentucky.

We were very happy that we made it to the walk and used our voices to speak out against injustice. Gerry spent the latter part of her life tirelessly working to bring awareness of the Chinese fishermen’s contribution to the community. Chinese developed fishing techniques and helped conduct research that enhanced the economic development of the region. She once said, “We will not let others sweep our history under the rug.” It was a momentous occasion seeing her hard work pay off and witnessing the historic statement by the City of Pacific Grove to the Chinese community at this year’s walk.

In addition, on July 1, 2022, a California State bill requires removal of “racial covenants” from property records. These “restrictive covenants” have not been enforceable in decades but are still written into the deeds of thousands of properties across the state. The covenants in titles and deeds once included language like “no person of any race other than the Caucasian or white race may use or occupy the property.” I am glad we continue to see change and progress.

Winny Linhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13760807791311320116noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7986018187216211673.post-1862134114263237792022-08-23T13:00:00.001-07:002022-08-23T13:23:36.101-07:00CHINESE MOON FESTIVAL 11 SEP 2022

COME JOIN US, OUR FIRST LIVE EVENT

CHINESE-AMERICAN CULTURAL EXCHANGE DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
By Winny Lin

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
The coronavirus pandemic not only has caused paramount economic problems for the world and caused astronomic numbers of death, it also has stirred an anti-Chinese movement in the United States. Science has been tossed aside and a few Americans are eager to blame Chinese for the crisis, since Wuhan, China was the first city shut down by coronavirus.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
In California, our governor Gavin Newsom issued his statewide “Shelter-in-Place” order on March 19, and announced,”We have to meet this moment!”

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
However, the crisis brought opportunities just like the Chinese characters <span style="font-family: "pingfang tc"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">危机. The first character means CRISIS and the second one means OPPORTUNITIES. Our South Bay chapter members have created opportunities to “meet this moment”!

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Somehow I reconnected with an old friend, Mr. Junsheng-jason Wen, who was recently promoted as the principal of #9 Senior High School in Anshan, Liaoning, China. Mr. Wen is a young and innovative educator whom I have known since 2007. He invited me to speak to his students who are mainly from either rural area or urban broken homes to broken their horizons. We tried Trecent, Skype, and finally decided on the platform of WeChat, the Chinese Facebook. Nine people could be on at one time meeting ‘face to face”. Our first meeting was to discuss what the students would like and they decided on “how to improve their conversational English and increase their vocabulary. I then invited some native speakers to join us. Our first guests were two American high school students from Walnut Creek, CA, Kellie Hintzoglou and Abby Young, to compare and contrast the Chinese and American high schools. A perfect topic!

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
As it turned out three of the students at our first meeting were musicians. Jimmy Li plays guitar, Iris Li Chinese flute, and Nicholas Li piano. Who knew I happened to see Yo-yo Ma interviewed on PBS News Hour on TV. After he performed Dvorak’s “Going Home”, he encouraged musicians worldwide on all skill levels to join him in providing comfort amid the global crisis. I quickly sensed this was one of those “opportunities” open to our Chinese young musicians.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
These three were so willing and in no time they sent me their musical videos:

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Jimmy did his own original rap in Chinese and English, “We should wear masks and we should stay home…. We learn some skills, joking, dancing, studying and we will be ok!”

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Iris played her Chinese flute and recited a poem in English about the coronavirus, “It is a war agains virus with doubts, fears, rumors ad discrimination. All of us are fighters in this war…..”

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
and Nicholas played his original piano piece. I was very impressed! Then I submitted them to PBS Facebook page CANVAS and they subsequently published all three videos. Both Principal Wen and I were extremely proud that his 3 students out of 900 from his rural school in Anshan, China got a shining moment on American Facebook.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Some of our South Bay Chapter members joined us on the WeChat sessions. First Chet Gnegy spoke with the musicians about his work and interest, even when he was in Vietnam (Thanks to the modern technology!) Another time Yanshuo Zhang talked to the students about her life journey from when she first visited the States as a 16-yr-old high school student to attend an American university, and now is an instructor at Stanford University.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Later I invited John Marienthal, chair of our South Bay Chapter. John has visited all the 26 provinces of China and taught English in Xinjiang and Shanghai respectively for years. He has the experience and passion and now he is the main American facilitator of two Sunday English sessions to help Chinese high school students improve their English and American culture.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Typical topics of discussion were “Festivals and sports in China and America”, “50th Anniversary of Earth Day and Volunteering to Help others”, “What activities do you do during and after school?” And “What are the top attractions of your city Anshan?”

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
The topics were chosen in sync with their school English curriculum and to help the students understand the world outside of Anshan, China. Mr. Wen is striving to help them develop a global view and at the same time to get them excited about life. After a month, I believe we are making good progress towards these goals. The South Bay chapter is doing its part to continue our interactions with China and the people even during these trying times as the coronavirus pandemic hits us all hard.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Anshan, Liaoning is located in northern China, about 92 kilometers south of the capital Shenyang where the USA has a consulate. It is the 3rd most populous city with 3.5 million people and famous for its Anshan Steel Company and its soft jade mining.

During the past two years, President Trump has rolled back
environmental regulations, pulled the United States out of the Paris climate
accord, and turned “global warming” into a punch line. “Wouldn’t be bad to have
a little of that good old-fashioned Global Warming right now!” he posted on
Twitter in January when a snowstorm was freezing much of the country.’ His
thesis is that Climate Change is a hoax created by the Chinese to adversely
affect U.S. Manufacturing.

Really?

Not so, explained Wei-Tai Kwok, a member of former Vice
President Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project, when he spoke to our group in
June. —“Increasing levels of heat-trapping gases, such as CO2, methane, and
nitrous oxide, are causing global average temperatures to rise. And China and America
are the world’s worst carbon-dioxide polluters, accounting for over 40% of
total annual global emissions.”

MUST WE CHANGE?

Mr. Kwok initially had nothing to do with climate
science. He had his own successful
advertising company and thought nothing of the climate, other than was the
weather nice enough to take his two young children to the park. Then one weekend in 2006, his wife suggested
they go see a new movie: An Inconvenient
Truth. The Oscar-and Nobel-Peace-Prize winning documentary,
narrated by Al Gore, detailed the science behind Climate Change. Mr. Kwok was
so moved by what he learned that he found it difficult to concentrate at work.
Every day that he wasn’t doing something to help the environment was a day he felt he was part of the problem,
rather than the solution So, after a
year of struggling with this moral challenge, he decided to make a major change
in his life. He sold his business, got a job working for the solar panel
company SunTech Power, and became a member of the Climate Reality Project. This
project, funded initially by Al Gore with proceeds from the movie and
subsequent book, aims to educate people around the world about climate issues,
and turn this awareness into action. Today the group consists of more than
20,000 scientists, cultural leaders, activists, and concerned citizens like Mr.
Kwok, committed to building a sustainable future together.

One of the first things Mr. Kwok pointed out is that 18 of
the 19 hottest years ever recorded by weather instruments have taken place since
2001, with the five hottest years being the last five years. Last summer, South
Korea and Algeria set new records for the hottest days in their countries, with
temperatures soaring to 103F and 124F, respectively. That same month, the
temperatures were so hot in Berkshire, England, that the asphalt melted,
trapping vehicles. In Shandong, China, it was so hot that a boy was actually
able to cook an egg on a manhole cover. More seriously, however, thousands of
people were taken to hospital, hundreds died due to global heat waves. “Every
day, we spew 110 million tons of global-warming pollution into the atmosphere,”
said Kwok. This pollution comes from
various sources: The dislodging of CO2 from soils, the burning of forests
without an emphasis on sustainability, mining operations which rely on fossil
fuels, the thawing of the permafrost in the arctic which dislodges both CO2 and
methane. “But the main source of the global warming pollution, by far,” said
Mr. Kwok, “Is our use of fossil fuels--oil, coal, and gas.”

Not only do the pollutants
increase air temperature, but also rainfall. Mr. Kwok pointed out the science: warmer
air holds more water vapor. As a result, we see more rainy days and more
intense rain. “In the US, extreme
downpours are now happening 30 percent more often (every nine months rather
than every 12 months) than in 1948. These downpours are also 10 percent more
intense on average, nationwide.”

In fact, weather disasters have become more common and more
intense. In March, a bomb cyclone hit,
causing massive flooding in the Midwest, a blizzard in Colorado and Wyoming,
and produced winds up to 110mph. Just last month over 200 tornadoes touched
down in the Midwest in just 13 days. On
Father’s day, 4 tornadoes touched down in Dallas. Double the typical rainfall for June in the
UK triggered flooding. The list goes on
and on. According to data Mr. Kwok
showed us put together by insurance agencies, in the 1980s there were 200 weather disasters per year. Today, there
are more than 800.

Finally, Mr. Kwok spoke about ways the climate affects
us—other than slowing our commute or messing up travel plans. “Changes in the climate,” he said, “Affect
our health. Vector-borne diseases (think
Zika Ebola, SARS, West Nile), heat stress, air pollution, and waterborne
diseases are all influenced by a changing climate.”

CAN WE CHANGE?

Mr. Kwok believes we
can change, and that China and America (who have the heaviest carbon
footprints) must take the lead. He, for one, traded in his gas-powered car for
electric, put solar panels on his house, and is taking steps towards becoming a
vegetarian. He also regularly contacts
his elected representatives to keep them focused on climate issues.

One of our audience
members applauded Mr. Kwok’s effort to not eat meat, mentioning the devastating
effects meat production has on the environment. Producing meat uses enormous amounts of
resources like land, crops, water, and energy while producing a colossal amount
of carbon-dioxide –equivalent gases. Meatlless Monday is a worldwide campaign
to get people to reduce meat consumption by 15%.

For those who cannot
put up solar panels, Mr. Kwok explained that all of the new competitive
electricity carriers in the Bay Area (PG&E, Silicon Valley Clean Energy,
Peninsula Clean Energy) offer service plans with a 100% clean-energy option. For
just a few dollars more each month, you can opt to get your electricity from sources
like solar and wind.

So, while Mr. Kwok suggested keeping in touch
with elected government officials, he emphasized the most important change
maker is YOU. Thirteen years ago when he
saw An Inconvenient Truth, he was
devastated. He was sure that his own children and grandchildren would witness
only further destruction. Today, he is hopeful.
Hopeful that we can learn what it is we are doing wrong and find ways to
change. All it takes is our willingness
to make change. One person at a time.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Two years ago, our South Bay Chapter heard Dr. Shelley Fisher Fishkin speak about her Stanford project: the lives and work of the thousands of Chinese laborers who provided the muscle that built the transcontinental railroad. This group of Chinese has been virtually ignored in American history. (It is with great pleasure that I noted NY Representative Grace Meng’s recent congressional resolution proposal to recognize the Chinese railroad workers and their important contribution to the growth of the United States.)

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Recently during my spring break, my husband Kenny and I visited the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento and became even more enthralled by the fascinating story of an engineering marvel that changed America. Then I happened to pick up a book from its gift shop, Ten Mile Day written and illustrated by Mary Ann Fraser. It examines in detail the very lives of the Chinese workers who made the feat possible and completed the final stretch of track of 10 miles in one day. Sadly no Chinese were invited in the Gold Spike ceremony on May 10, 1969.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Together these resources created in me a strong desire to find a way to share my newly acquired knowledge and enthusiasm with others. The coming of the 150th anniversary and celebration on May 10 at Golden Spike National Historical Park, Utah made it even more compelling. I never really thought about going to Utah for the celebration, but perhaps I could find another way to participate.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Out of the blue came the perfect opportunity. A very good teacher friend, Mrs. Virginia Alexanian, asked me to be her guest teacher on April 30. What could be better than this: to share a piece of important history with some young minds? Her fourth grade class has 30-plus talented and challenging students, but I have established a good relationship with them earlier this school year. They would be my captured audience!

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Thankfully Mrs. Alexanian agreed that a day devoted to the transcontinental railroad especially studying the Central Pacific built mainly by Chinese laborers would be very suitable. Besides California history is in their 4th grade core content.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
I selected four real-life individuals who could speak about the 6-year effort to build the railroad. Each one would be portrayed by a student with a monologue:

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 13px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Theodore Judah:

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
I am one of the finest railroad engineers of my days. For years I have been trying to tell anyone who would listen that a transcontinental railroad was possible given the necessary time, treasure and energy. The project would link East to West and unify the country.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
I made 23 trips through the Sierra Nevadas searching for an appropriate path for the railroad and I finally figured out the route.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 13px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Leland Stanford

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
I am one of the Big Four that invested in building the railroad and the 8th Governor of California. I am also the one who drove the Golden Spike to join the rails connecting the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific railroads on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
With the money I made and the land that I gained from building the railroad, I founded Stanford University.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
(He considered Chinese as an inferior race in his governor’s inaugural address, but ironically at Stanford University nowadays there is a large number of Chinese descendants among the student population.)

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 13px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Charles Crocker

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
I am also one of the Big Four that invested in building the railroad. When others did not believe Chinese could handle the job, I said, “Did they not build the Chinese wall, the biggest piece of masonry in the world?” Central Pacific hired 12,000-15,000 Chinese and we successfully beat the Union Pacific in the 10-mile race.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
(I also wanted a female representative so I picked Hannah Strobridge).

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 13px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Hannah Strobridge

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
My husband and I are the only ones to have an office and house on the train and I saw the project from the start to finish. I even have a canary cage swinging on our front porch.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
As the story was unraveled, the students became very excited from the dramatization and reenactment when Leland Stanford character drove in the golden spike(I brought a hammer and a 2-in long golden screw as props.) When they finally got to use their Chromebook to look for images and more details to create their own version of the story on their one-page graphic organizer. Several of their artwork, thought processes, and reflections were quite amazing!

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
One girl looked on the internet and started copying some Chinese characters. At first, I didn’t get the association of that and our topic “Transcontinental Railroad”. Later, when she finished, I clearly saw that she had put the Chinese characters <span style="font-family: "pingfang tc"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">爱 love, <span style="font-family: "pingfang tc"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">信faith, <span style="font-family: "pingfang tc"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">喜happiness, in a column to describe the Chinese laborers. How appropriate!

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
I also gave them index cards if they wanted design a souvenir for the celebration. One student drew a mug and another designed a locket with a golden spike in the middle.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 12px;">

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
I feel very blessed to have shared some of the excitement and history with Mrs. Alexanian’s class! They learned about the key players, the route over the mountains, and how Chinese were mistreated and put in danger! One of the outcomes might be a better understanding of the phrase “Justice for all!” when they say the Pledge of Allegiance each morning!

Remember several years ago, I was on a tour bus to Yosemite National Park, and passed a sign in Chinese “樂居” and got very curious! On May 12, my husband, Kenny, and I finally got a chance to attend Locke Asian Pacific Spring Festival at this Locke, Historical District, an unincorporated community in California built by Chinese immigrants in 1915 for the Chinese.

With our 40 Walnut Creek Senior Club members, Lorraine came along. She grew up in Locke, and gave us a very detailed description of her childhood life on the bus. Her father and three uncles were among the 600 Chinese that used to live in Locke and raised their families in this town in Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. It is located in the primarily agricultural region, so she said she picked pears and ate them off the tree and never understood why people paid for them. As a matter of fact, Chinese at that time worked as farmhands shared rooms in the boarding houses. There were as many as 1,000 to 1,500 Chinese people living in Locke. Lorraine only remembered some good time when she was growing up like swimming in the nearby Sacramento River with friends and cousins. However she remembered she got into trouble one time when she went to a brick building and commented,”Why is this school called white school? It should be called red school.” She didn’t realize at the time Chinese were segregated from the whites until later. When they were finally integrated, she was so looking forward to the senior prom, but it was cancelled because they were not allowed to touch hands.

Now the population of Locke is predominantly white, and I was told it has no more than 10 Chinese families. Most of the descendants of the Chinese families got better education and moved out and joined the American mainstream for white-collar jobs. However the Locke Foundation that is dedicated to the preservation of the Locke’s historic legacy has been trying to bring more Chinese back. So when we wandered around to the end of the Main Street, we ran into this artist who just won the battle in the court and bought this property for her studio. Where we had lunch, the white owner of the cafe said she lost the battle, because the Chinese-Americans had the first right to purchase any buildings in Locke for the sake of preserving its history and culture. How interesting! Discrimination reversed.

This is where the Chinese children spent extra time to study Chinese language and culture, heritage and traditions on top of their what curriculum they received in American schools. in front of the school, there are two busts, one is Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the modern China that was established in 1911. The other one is Confucius, the Master Teacher of China. During China’s Revolutionary War, Dr. Sun traveled to the Sacramento Delta region in 1909 and 1910 to rally support and raise funds, since most of the Chinese here came from the Pearl River Delta Region in Guangdong Province in Southeast China where Dr. Sun lived. The building was built in 1915 with funds from Dr. Sun’s Kuomingtong (KMT) and it became a school in 1926. Inside of the school, there is a photo of Dr. Sun on the wall, and all the writings were in traditional Chinese, not in simplified Chinese, and also there is a flag of Republic of China (Taiwan), not the five-star flag of People’s Republic of China, and the national anthem of Republic of China. In 1990 National Park service of United States Dept. of the Interior has designated Locke as National Historic Landmark because “it is the largest and most complete example of a rural Chinese-American community in the United States. No comparable district exists that so clearly illustrates rural Chinese American life.” Not until 2006, the Memorial Garden was built . Decedents of the original residents came back and added a wall with bricks identifying their names and quotes. One quote said “When you drink the water, remember the spring” 飲水思源. How true! No matter where they are now in the US, the descendants want to remember where they came from! It all started in the early 1900’s in Locke. (See photo #5)

When we were looking for a place to eat lunch, I noticed a sign in both Chinese 大來賭舘 and English Dai Loy Gambling House, I couldn’t pass it up. Kenny and I both went in and looked around ( photo #6). The lights were dim and different games like dice were on display. One room seemed to be the control room where people would manage the money. Very interesting! At its peak, there were four gambling houses for thousands of Chinese laborers. I can understand when so many Chinese couldn’t have their families come over from China during the Chinese Exclusion Act era (1882-1943), people needed a place to spend their money and time.

Conclusions:

I don’t know why all my non-Chinese seniors on the bus wanted to take this tour to Locke, but Kenny and I left this place very satisfied. I have learned more about the struggles of the Chinese immigrants who came before me, and this place seemed so peaceful on the day we visited. However I can imagine in the early 1900’s, these Chinese families would get together around tables to share a feast, and children would play nearby. Just like Lorraine said they were looking forward to a good time with other children. At least she was well protected in the Locke community. Not like the horror story I heard on PBS “Chinese Exclusion Act”, when some 28 Chinese miners were killed and 15 were injured. White rioters burned 78 Chinese homes. I am thankful Lorraine seemed very confident and happy. She is just many other Chinese descendants of Locke families have integrated into the mainstream.

If you are interested in visiting this place, it is located 1/2 mile north of Walnut Grove, CA by Hwy 5.

For nearly all the four decades I have lived in the United States I have worked to share the wonders of Chinese culture with my fellow Americans, especially the young and their parents. My interest in continuing to explore ways to deepen the understanding of Chinese culture among Americans has only increased, since my husband and I moved to the Bay Area in 2014.

 The resources for doing this here are abundant. We realized this years ago when we were just tourists in Chinatown, San Francisco. We felt nostalgic, curiosity, and fulfillment just by being there. We shopped the open market, took the free SF City Public Library walking tours, and learned about the tongs, alleys, history, from different tour guides. Now, Chinatown is a regular part of our lives: we found a barber, volunteered in Cameron House, attended First Presbyterian Church, ate in restaurants, found an old college buddy who now owns his own shop there, visited the Chinese-American Historical Society and walked the streets for miles.

 I gradually realized that Chinatown offered an unparalleled opportunity to introduce others, both children and adults, to Chinese culture. What I needed was an opportunity to gather together a group with whom I could share my passion.

For example, they learned that Chinese eat zhong zi for Chinese Dragon Boat Festival. They enjoyed the story of Qu Yuan. On one occasion I brought a dozen boiled eggs to class, so my students could play the egg game like the Chinese had written about in a letter.

Another time, one of my students saw the figure 666 in his pen pal’s letter and he mistook that as sign of the devil. This gave me an opportunity to explain what Chinese think about numbers: 9, 8, 6, are considered lucky numbers, and 4 is not, because it sounds like “death” in Mandarin Chinese. Some buildings in China may not even have a 4th floor (like some American buildings do not have a 13th floor.) I was thrilled to have had a chance to discuss cultural differences.

What I really wanted to do was to take them to China. Of course, that was out of the question, but maybe the second-best thing would be to take them to San Francisco’s Chinatown.

So, what did I do? Shortly after summer vacation started, I contacted parents and invited them to bring their children on a tour to Chinatown. The ball started rolling. In the end to my surprise, 21 children and 12 adults showed up.

We gathered at a BART station. On the train into SF city, I passed out a list of things to my students to compare and contrast Chinese and American culture. We got off at Powell station, walked to the Dragon Gate through Union Square, and entered the largest Chinatown outside of Asia.

 Everyone was so excited as you can see from our group photo in front of the Dragon Gate.

 I happily welcomed the help of a teacher and a parent to map out routes, brainstorm ideas, and to determine where we could stop for something interesting.

 On Grant Ave. some children bought some ‘poppers’, a kind of Chinese firecracker that one throws to the ground making a popping noise. The children were fully engaged and so excited. I encouraged them to pay close attention to what they were seeing and to share their observations with one another. They reacted just like I did all those years ago as they encountered another world, a world different from the western world that they came from, but one right in San Francisco. I wondered what was going through their minds, but I could see how engaged they were.

We stopped at Waverly Place and I pointed out that Amy Tan named one of her characters ‘Waverly’ in her famous novel ‘The Joy Luck Club,’. After that we visited Tin How Temple (天后廟), one of the oldest Daoist Temples in the US. Luckily one of the docents was giving a talk about the religion and the story of Mazhu, Goddess of the Sea and we listened in. That was absolutely a treat!

 No tour of Chinatown would be complete without taste of China. We barged into a restaurant by Waverly Place and seated ourselves at three big tables, with all the children at one table. Some of these children had never had real Chinese food before, but they were ready to explore new taste sensations. The adults were more adventurous and tried dishes that the locals would have ordered. Then we walked to my favorite Chinese bakery on Stockton for dessert, egg tart or Napoleon.

 By 2:00 PM some people had to leave to meet other commitments (e.g., baseball practice). As we were breaking up, I began to realize just how successful this cross-culture adventure had been. I could say goodbye to my favorite 5th graders and their parents knowing that we had, together, sowed some seeds that would germinate well into the future. Even now, when I run into the parents or students in town, they still talk about this experience

 My passion continues. I am convinced that school curricula can be adapted to make cross-cultural learning fun and productive.

 Since Chinese New Year is approaching Feb. 16 this year, I have started sharing “The Great Race” with younger K-3 students. It is a very cute story about 12 Chinese zodiac animals and they are responding well. I also work with 4th and 5th graders performing a skit of ‘The Story of Nian’ which explains the origin of Chinese New Year and involves the dragon, or Nian. It is easy to fit a fiction assignment into the writing curriculum and a project involving Chinese paper folding or paper cutting into an arts class.

Chinese culture has plenty to offer in the classroom. All it takes is a teacher ready and willing to do so.

On August 26th, the Director of the American
Studies Program at Stanford, Dr. Shelley Fisher Fishkin joined USCPFA to
explain some special research: the Chinese Railroad Workers in North America
Project.

Dr. Shelley Fisher Fishkin explains research.

Dr. Fishkin said that when she joined the University in
2003, she had heard that Chinese labor was the key to the fortune with which
Leland Stanford founded Stanford University, and assumed she would find
something in the library—a letter from one of the workers or a something. There was nothing. She asked her colleague in the history
department, Dr. Gordon H. Chang, where she might find something. He said,
“Nowhere.” Not a single letter or journal entry or remittance slip from the
people who had done the most for the railroad…for the university, for the states,
for the country.

Just as unbelievable—and heartbreaking-- was a collective
national amnesia that the Chinese had even participated. During the 100th
anniversary of the completion of the railroad in 1969, a celebration was held
during which the role of the Chinese was attributed to non-Chinese.
“Who else but Americans can drill ten tunnels in mountains 30 feet deep in
snow?” asked the orator officiating the ceremony, Secretary of Transportation
John Volpe. “Who else but Americans could chisel through miles of solid
granite? Who else but Americans could have laid ten miles of track in twelve
hours?”

But, the people who performed all those engineering marvels
hadn’t been Americans.

They had been Chinese.

Let’s look back. In the 1800s it took months to travel from
the east coast of the United States to west, and sometimes people didn’t make
it. (Think Donner Party, 1846).
Communication, goods and services took time as well, and lots of it. So,
despite the demands of the raging Civil War, President Lincoln signed a bill
and urged Congress to back him on the construction of a transcontinental
railroad. In 1862, Congress passed that
bill—the Pacific Railroads Act—authorizing two railroad companies (the Union
Pacific and the Central Pacific) to construct lines.

The owners of the Union Pacific hired more than 8,000 Irish,
German and Italian immigrants to build west from Omaha, Nebraska. This portion
of the railroad line was relatively easy to build, since the land across the
prairies was flat. On the other hand, the Central Pacific—from west to
east—proved to be more difficult. The
line from Sacramento to the east had to cut through the Sierra Nevada mountain
range—an incredibly difficult task, which included building tunnels through
long stretches of solid granite in unpredictable and harsh weather.

Said Dr. Fishkin, “After
a year of struggling with Caucasian workers who didn’t want to work in the
Sierra Nevada, and who were quitting on him in droves, Charles Crocker, who oversaw the construction—suggested hiring
Chinese workers.”

This was an odd suggestion at the time. This was right after the California gold rush
when many Chinese had left drought, famine and war in China, and come to the
U.S. to seek out their fortune. The Chinese were accused of taking all the
jobs, of having strange eating habits, of being barbaric. Leland Stanford, in
his inaugural address as Governor of California in 1862, had promised to rid the state of “the dregs
of Asia,” meaning the Chinese people.

But, in 1864, the businessman Stanford--one of the owners of
the Central Pacific, and no longer governor-- decided these “dregs” would be
his best bet.

It is estimated that 12-15,000 Chinese worked on and
finished the railroad. (Almost twice the number of Irish, Italian, Germans
employed for the Union Pacific.) As Leland Stanford wrote in a letter to
President Johnson in 1865, “The greater portion of the laborers employed by us
are Chinese…..Without them it would be impossible to complete the western
portion of this great national enterprise, within the time required by the Acts
of Congress.”

This Chinese labor—and the completion of the railroad-- not
only created a good part of the fortune which founded Stanford University, but
more importantly linked the east coast to the west coast, and made it possible
to get from one end to the other in a week rather than three months. “It paved
the way for new waves of settlers to travel from east to west, and provided a
much less expensive way to transport goods,” said Dr. Fishkin. “The labor of
the Chinese helped hasten America’s entry into the world as a modern nation.”

So one would think the Chinese participation in this
important piece of history is all well documented.

It isn’t. To right this wrong, and to avoid repeating that
disgraceful 1969 ceremony at the 150th anniversary of the railroad’s
completion in 2017, Dr Fishkin and Dr. Chang convened a group of researchers at
Stanford, creating the Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project. The
purpose of the project, which is sponsored by universities, foundations and
private donors worldwide, is to find out who these Chinese were and what
happened to them. For, despite the overwhelmingly large participation of the
Chinese on the railroad, very little is known about them as individuals. There
are no memoirs to turn to. Very little written documentation.

The Chinese Railroad Workers Project is exploring every
avenue.

They are looking at
photographs, and payroll records. From the latter, it is clear that not
only did Chinese workers have to pay for their food and lodging and tools from
their wages, they weren’t paid as well. According to one scholar’s
calculations, the Chinese workers cost the Central Pacific about two-thirds of
what it paid white workers.

The Railroad Project
is looking at company reports, government census files, and immigration
records. They are exploring letters, books and newspaper articles. From
these they discovered that the winter of 1886-1887, when the Chinese were
working on blasting through the Sierra Nevada Mountains, was one of the
harshest on record. There were 44 storms and an average of 18 feet of snow on
the summit. One article they found detailed how a snow slide killed 19 Chinese
workers. Snow wasn’t the only danger. “Landslides, explosions, blasting
accidents, falls, Indian raids, and disease all took their toll,” Dr. Fishkin
said.

Another article noted that during construction of the summit
tunnel (1659 feet long through solid Sierra Nevada granite) many people had
predicted it would take three years to do what the Chinese workers did in
one. Another feat was documented on
April 28, 1869: 4,000 Chinese laborers working with eight Irish rail handlers
laid ten miles and fifty-six feet of track in a bit less than twelve hours. (This was the engineering feat Secretary Volpe
mistakenly attributed to American labor in the ceremony in 1969.) That record
has never been duplicated in railroad construction.

The Railroad Project
is also following the findings of archeologists who have worked along the
railroad route, and have unearthed thousands of pieces of rice bowls, gaming
pieces, cooking vessels and opium pipes.

They are asking the
descendants of the railroad workers to come forward and share what they know. As a result, slowly, what once was this blurry
idea of “Chinese laborers” is becoming clearer.

“For example,” said Dr. Fishkin. “Wilson Chow said his great
grandfather Jun Yuk Chow left his home in Kaiping County, attracted by the idea
of the Gold Rush, and took a ferry to Hong Kong where he booked 3rd
class passage on a 3-mast sailboat across the Pacific. The journey took 48
days. He worked as a miner in Gold Hill, Nevada, when he was recruited to work
on the Central Pacific.

“Another worker—Lim Lip Hong—similarly came looking for
gold. He left Guangdong on a junk with his uncle and twelve relatives in 1885.
Their journey took six months, as they got stuck in a dead zone in the middle
of the ocean. Several of the group tried to commit suicide. They finally made
it across. Some years later, they too were recruited to work on the railroad.”

The supply of Chinese workers already in the country was not
enough to meet the demand of the railroad, so Central Pacific began recruiting
directly from China. Hung Lai Wow left his village in Toisan as a teenager,
along with one of his brothers, to join the work crew. Chin Lin Sou was also
recruited directly from Guangdong.

Despite all of the accomplishments of the Chinese railroad
workers—and after the Central Pacific, many went on to build other railroad lines,
performing other marvels, other engineering feats—waves of anti-Chinese
hostility continued to grow. “From 1870-1890 the Chinese were attacked all
across the west and driven out of 34 towns in California, three in Oregon, and
four in Nevada. There were 153 anti-Chinese riots between 1870-1880,” said Dr.
Fishkin.

Anti-Chinese hysteria prompted lawmakers to pass the Chinese
Exclusion Act in 1882. That act would
stay in place until 1943.

The Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project is
doing its utmost to remember and honor the people who worked hard—despite
extreme hardship—to make America what it is today. “We are trying to tell a
story that has indelibly shaped us all,” said Dr. Fishkin.

And continues to shape us.

For the descendants of railroad workers include Flying
Tigers defending the shores of the America,
famous actresses, like Arabella Hong (Flower Drum Song) and Medal of
Arts recipients, like novelist Maxine Hong Kingston, etc. etc.

Two years ago, Stanford co-hosted a conference in Guangdong,
the region from which nearly all the railroad workers came from, and the
University officially recognized the achievements of these Chinese workers for
the very first time. The secret
about who is responsible for thrusting America into the modern world is being
revealed, thanks to the Chinese Railroad Workers Project in North America, one
story at a time. Keep your eyes out in the near future for a description of the
project in book form. Also, look forward to the celebration of the 150th
Anniversary of the railroad, a celebration we all can be proud of.
